Situated on the railway line running from Zittau to Dresden and surrounded by the mountains Kottmar, Beckenberg, Lerchenberg and Spitzberg, Eibau is one of the typical Upper Lusatian street villages with its main street B 96 running through it about a length of approximately 4.2 kilometres.
The appearance of our 655 year old community is characterized by a typical, half-timbered type of houses representing a combination of Franconian and Slavic style with many elements of rural baroque. These traditional houses are called Umgebindehäuser and Faktorenhäuser, the latter being houses where linen traders lived. They are evidence of the tradition of linen weaving and the trade with linen. With the beginning of the industrialisation in the early 19th century, the linen traders, so-called Faktoren, founded mechanical weaving mills which then, in addition to agriculture, defined the character of the village until the wall came down in 1989.
The Faktorenhof, a historical three-sided farm, formerly home of a linen trader and nowadays architectural monument, and the museum of local history Beckenbergmuseum (also called Heimat- und Humboldtmuseum Eibau) are only two examples of the numerous leisure facilites Eibau offers its visitors and tourists. Our outdoor swimming pool has a water surface of 3,000 square metres and is considered one of the nicest and most popular outdoor swimming pools of the region.
The athletic facilities of our community, the gymnasium Sporthalle “Am Kottmar” and the fitness centre for example, demonstrate that exercise also has top priority in our community.
Furthermore, Eibau is not only known nationwide for its Eibauer Schwarzbier, a dark beer, but also for a traditional parade called Bier- und Traditionszug taking place every last Sunday in June since 1993.
Finally, there is the Spree river which has one of its sources on the Kottmar mountain and via which we have a „direct transportation link“ to our federal capital Berlin. Together with two other sources in the neighbouring cities of Neugersdorf and Ebersbach, the source on the Kottmar mountain forms a region called Spreequellland (region of the sources of the Spree river).
We would be pleased to welcome you soon as our guests in the Spreequellland.
